Search FAQ
What are the basics of searching?
Choosing Keywords
For the best results, it's important that you choose the words your using wisely. Use specific words or phrases to find exactly what you're looking for. More general search terms will give a larger number of results, so you may want to narrow your search if you're looking for more specific results.
For example:
- Use "Excel Charts" instead of "Excel"
- Use "mail merge" instead of "word"
- Use "windows security" instead of "security"
Phrase Searches
The system ignores Boolean search operators such as: AND, OR, and NOT. When a phrase is entered in the search text box, an implied OR is used between the words.
Capitalization
Site searches are not case sensitive. All search terms, regardless of how they are entered, are recognized as lower case. For example, if you're searching "Microsoft Word", "microsoft word" and "MICROSOFT WORD" will all return the same results.
Word Variations
If you're not sure how to spell an entire word, or if you want to broaden your search, you may enter word variations as long as the variation entered is part of an actual word. If it's not part of an actual word, your results may vary.
Search by Default
On the Advanced Search page, you have the option of leaving the search term text box empty. If you chose not to enter search terms the search will return all results that meet the criteria for the content type chosen, along with any other criteria specified for training and resources. Note: The results for Online Instructor-led Courses and Classroom Courses that have open registration will be returned at the top of the results.
How do I narrow my original searches?
To narrow your search, select a Content Type from the drop-down list. This action will limit your results to this specific content type you've chosen. Once you have selected a content type, enter more specific keywords in the text box. For example, use "Excel Charts" instead of "Excel". In this case, the search results would return all records that match "Excel Charts" for the specific content type chosen.
How do I revise my search after viewing the results?
To revise your search, you can update your search terms in the Revise Search box on the Search Results page and perform the search again. You also have the options to search within the current results by checking Search within results or limit the search to title only by checking the Search title only option. If the word or phrase is found in the product title, it will be highlighted in the title on the search results page.
How do I restrict my search?
The Advanced Search page gives you the option of searching on Training and/or Resources and allows you to specify how you want to use the word or phrase you've entered for searching.
For example if you wanted to find all Online Instructor-led courses and text books, in all languages, that relate to "An Introduction to Java", you would do the following:
- Enter "An Introduction to Java" in the word or phrase to search by field
- Select All of these words from the drop-down
- Select the check box next to Search title only
- Select the check box next to Self-paced Courses
- Select the check box next to All Languages
- Select Reference Materials under Resources
You can obtain broader, more general search results by specifying fewer criteria, or perform a more detailed search by selecting more criteria.
Why can't I find my foreign language content?
A development path outlines courses and resources available to help you gain knowledge and skills for a specified job function or topic area. Development paths may be specific to your organization or may involve more general knowledge.
What does Search title only mean?
If the Search title only option is chosen, in the Revise Search section, the search criteria will be used to search the product title only. The search results will be displayed as highlighted in the product title.
How are search results determined?
The order of results is determined by a combination of several different factors, including the priority of the data that you're searching. Information such as Product Name and Keyword take a higher priority over Product Description.
The Product Name, Product Description and Keyword are used when searching for all product types. However, each one of these is assigned a different priority. Additionally, Vendor Name, which is used when searching for all product types (except Online Technical Reference), is a lower priority than Product Name and Keyword.
There are several other factors used when searching in addition to those listed above including: Topic Name, Course Objective, Author, Publisher, and others, depending on the product type you're searching.
